What is the character limit for a WhatsApp message?
Free-form WhatsApp messages support up to 4,096 characters. Marketing and utility template messages have stricter limits: 60 chars for the header, 1,024 for the body, 60 for the footer and 25 per button label.
Do emojis count as one character?
In display terms, yes — each emoji counts as one visible character. Under the hood many emojis are multi-byte (UTF-16 surrogate pairs), so they cost 2 JavaScript code units. This counter reports both the visible grapheme count and the raw code-unit length so you know exactly where you stand.
What is the WhatsApp template body limit?
The WhatsApp Business Platform template body is capped at 1,024 characters including variables expanded at send time. Plan your copy with margin so personalised variables don't push the rendered message over the limit.
Does WhatsApp count line breaks?
Yes. Each newline is one character. Long messages with lots of line breaks can hit the limit faster than expected.
Why does my WhatsApp template get rejected for length?
Meta validates the rendered message — header 60, body 1,024, footer 60, button text 25. If a variable expands to push body over 1,024 it fails. Use this counter on the unrendered template plus the longest variable values to catch it before submission.
